A TRADITIONAL wedding pageant in Elgin's twin town of Landshut is set to make a return in 2023.

Members of the Elgin Landshut Twinning Association were pleased to learn that the Landshuter Hochzeit is back next year and are encouraging locals to get involved and make the trip to Germany for the occasion.

The wedding pageant takes place every four years, usually during the month of July.

It replicates the marriage that took place in 1475 between George, son of the Duke of Bavaria, and Princess Hedwig of Poland.

It is one of the largest historical pageants in Europe with feasting, jousting as well as the wedding procession, which takes place on Sundays.

Many of the citizens of Landshut – both children and adults – will dress in medieval garments during festival days.

Families from in and around Elgin have made exchange visits with families in Landshut for more than 50 years. Pupils from Elgin Academy have also participated in school exchanges with the town's school, Hans Leinberger Gymnasium.

Firm friendships have been established throughout the years with families seeing each other’s children getting married, grandchildren being born and even Elgin residents moving to Landshut to live and work.

The Landshut Twinning Association is inviting people across Elgin and Moray to visit Landshut for next summer's wedding pageant.

The trip will be from Friday, June 30, to Tuesday, July 11, with the flight going to Munich – where a bus will meet those going to take them Landshut.

There, visitors will stay with Landshut-based families, who are always very hospitable.

While learning a few German phrases is advised, language is not a problem as most hosts speak English and it can be fun trying to communicate in each other’s language.

As tickets for next year’s pageant are expected to be in greater demand, people in Landshut need to know firm numbers by the first week in December.

Once numbers are set, The Landshut Twinning Association can give a price for the trip.

If you want to join the trip, contact Eileen Gordon, the chairperson of the Landshut Twinning Association, by email at elta.chair@gmail.com or by telephone on 07858935276.
