Elgin is one of 10 towns battling out for the title of the most walkable urban area across England, Scotland and Wales.

Ramblers' annual award celebrates areas where positive steps have been taken to create green, welcoming and walkable neighbourhoods that put people – rather than cars – at their heart.

Elgin earned its place on the shortlist thanks to its "pleasant and walkable centre", which is "easily accessible on foot from nearby new housing developments". The fully pedestrianised high street is also a highlight, with a good range of shops and services, was also a highlight, Ramblers added.

Richard Lochhead, Member of Scottish Parliament for Moray, lives in Elgin and is backing the town to win. He said: "A lot of effort has been put in over the years to make Elgin a really good walking location. There are many good walking routes – whether you live in one of the local housing estates or on outskirts of town, there’ll be a walking route close by to get you from A to B."

Vanessa Griffiths, chief executive of the Ramblers, said: "We want everyone to be able to enjoy the benefits of walking and getting outdoors every day, wherever they live and work. Our finalists this year are fantastic examples of how communities and local authorities can work together to create neighbourhoods that are designed around people. We want councils and developers across the country to follow their example."

The nine other areas in the running for Britain’s Best Walking Neighbourhood are Chorlton and Whalley Range (Greater Manchester), Bow and Three Mills (London), Greater Brockley (London), Falkirk, The Deepings (Lincolnshire), Aberystwyth (Wales), Cambridge, Milton Keynes and Brighton (all England).
