A LEADING young jazz trio are hoping to pack out an Elgin venue next month.

Multi award-winning pianist Fergus McCreadie and his band have led a fresh young wave in energizing the Scottish jazz scene.

The Fergus McCreadie Trio are lined up to play St Giles Church on Saturday, February 29, at 7.30pm.

Unusually for a jazz band, the trio, with David Bowden on bass and Stephen Henderson on drums, made the shortlist for the Scottish Album of the Year Award 2019.

Fergus said: "There’s a good feeling around jazz right now. There are a lot of good young players coming through, especially at the Royal Conservatoire in Glasgow, and they’re attracting interest from music fans as well as the press. It’s exciting to be part of that."

He added: "We’ll be playing music from our first album, which won the Album of the Year title at both the Parliamentary Jazz Awards and the Scottish Jazz Awards last year, as well as tracks from the new album we’ve just recorded. It’s influenced by Scottish folk music as well as the American and Nordic musicians I’ve listened to a lot. We try to make it as exciting and melodic as possible and we put a lot of passion into it.

"We’re really looking forward to playing in St Giles Church. I know it from working on the Let It Snow Christmas show and it’s a great venue. We like playing in churches. Quite a lot of jazz concerts happen in churches or former churches, like the Queen's Hall in Edinburgh, and we enjoy playing in them."

The band has performed at the Glasgow, Edinburgh, Fife, Aberdeen and Islay jazz festivals and has toured in Norway, Sweden, Lithuania and Estonia. The group has also appeared at Oslo and Stockholm jazz festivals and Ronnie Scott’s International Piano Trio Festival.

Tickets, costing £15, are available from IT Central, on South Street, and at www.forteproductions.co.uk.
