Whether it's learning to speak French or playing the ukulele – the Elgin and District branch of U3A has a bit of everything on offer.

The branch, whose members generally range in age from 55 upwards, runs a truly wide range of activities.

And now it's looking for more folk to join in with one or more of them.

The Elgin and district branch's walking group goes on outings which vary from a short stroll to 'bagging' a Ben.

Its film club meets twice a month to watch a movie and enjoy a chat afterwards.

Its local history group researches Moray's past, while its family history group seeks to learn more about its members' ancestors.

Amongst many others, there are also groups which focus on singing, books, cooking, table tennis, dancing, jigsaws, crocheting and crafts, computing, golf, Latin, scrabble, backgammon, Italian, German, chess and photography.

A spokesman for the branch said: "We're open to all, but our members are mainly drawn from retired people or those with time on their hands.

"Our main aims are to foster friendship and a sense of community and belonging.

"Some of activities are energetic, some sedentary, some cerebral, some dexterous – but they are all fun.

"There are opportunities to continue to learn, to pick up new knowledge and skills, and to teach others.

"And there are no exams involved!"

The U3A used to be known as the University of the Third Age.

However it has now dropped its full title because it doesn't want people put off by thoughts that it's connected to academic studies.

Each branch is run by its members for its members and is responsible for its own finances and how it functions.

Some groups in Elgin are still meeting via Zoom because of the pandemic but others are beginning to venture back.

The branch spokesperson added: "The U3A has been seen as a lifesaver for many retirees and for people moving into the area, as well as those who may be coping with bereavement, family illness or whose relatives are distant."
