A SIX-YEAR-OLD bike fanatic has gone the extra mile to help a breast cancer charity.

Lewis Mackay, from Keith, raised more than £7000 for Breast Cancer Now in June – decimating his original target of £250 when he set off to cover 100 miles on his new bike throughout the month.

The youngster reached his 100-mile mark in mid-June – and decided to keep on pedalling.

He then doubled his target to 200 miles, finishing his challenge last Sunday.

Lewis was joined by dad Kyle and mum Lisa, grannies, grandas, uncles and aunties for his last cycle leg out at Netherton Farm, on the outskirts of Keith.

His auntie Trisha Davidson is a well-known fundraiser for Breast Cancer Now. What would have been the 11th year of her popular annual strawberry tea at Netherton was called off due to the coronavirus pandemic. The event has amassed more than £27,000 for the charity in the past decade.

Lewis mounted his bike effort to support Tricia’s alternative fundraiser this year. She has been running a local strawberry tea delivery service as a substitute for the usual Netherton event, which has been very well supported.

Dad Kyle, of Fife Avenue, cycled alongside Lewis throughout the challenge. He said: “We are super proud of him.”

Tricia thanked local police for helping to slow traffic down during the last leg of Lewis’s challenge. She also said many people were out on the streets cheering him on.

She said: “I’m so proud of Lewis. He has taken it all in his stride and he’s enjoyed doing it, which is the main thing. He’s loved being out cycling with his dad, and Kyle has been just great too. He’s a wee champ in my eyes. I’d like to thank all the people who have got behind Lewis and myself and have supported us so generously.”
