Lib Dems choose Neil Alexander as party's MP candidate for Moray West, Nairn and Strathspey
THE Liberal Democrats have chosen Neil Alexander as their candidate for the Moray West, Nairn and Strathspey constituency for the upcoming General Election.
At an announcement with supporters in Elgin, Mr Alexander, a local game designer, was confirmed as the party's candidate calling for voters to "kick out the divisions of the past".
Local councillors Kathleen Robertson and Graham Leadbitter have been selected to stand for the Conservatives and the SNP respectively.
Mr Alexander said: “We deserve so much better than the scandal-ridden Conservatives and SNP.
“At the heart of it, they are two sides of the same coin - always looking to divide people based on one political issue.
“It’s time for us to put our local priorities first, from Aviemore to Nairn, Lossiemouth to Ardersier, we need to be dealing with the problems we face in 2024, not focusing on the past.
"There is more that unites us than divides us.
“We have been campaigning on local issues that matter to our area, and that’s what you will get with a Lib Dem MP."
Mr Alexander is the leader of the Moray Lib Dems. He is also the the sport and culture spokesperson for the Scottish Lib Dems but announced his intention to stand as a MP candidate in Moray late last year.
He was voted in unanimously by local part members.
Alex Cole-Hamilton, leader of Scottish Liberal Democrats, said: “Of all the rising stars in the Scottish Liberal Democrats, Neil Alexander is definitely one of the brightest.
“He cares so passionately about his community, and wants nothing more than to serve the people of Moray West in the UK Parliament.
“He has my full support, and he has hit the ground running, picking up key local issues."
The party says that boundary changes to the Moray constituency have given them a "unique opportunity" for the upcoming election.
And Mr Alexander says he is optimistic the election will signify "big change".
He added: "If you want an end to the constant division of the two nationalist parties, vote Liberal Democrat.
“Only the Lib Dems have won in the new boundaries against the SNP, only the Lib Dems will put our community first, not the same arguments of the past
“It’s what I’ve always done as a local campaigner, and it’s what I’ll continue to do if I’m lucky enough to be your MP."
