Mr Lochhead attacked the performance of the Conservative Government after Ms Truss's announcement outside Downing Street today (October 20).

Truss's resignation came after a day of chaos in Westminster yesterday (October 19), during which trusted advisor Jason Stein was sacked, Home Secretary Suella Braverman resigned, confusion abounded over a fracking bill which was apparently a "confidence motion"; and rumours flew around the resignation of the Conservative Chief Whip and Deputy Chief Whip.

Liz Truss was in office for 45 days, during which her "mini budget" collapsed due to market pressure; Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng resigned and was replaced by Jeremy Hunt and nearly all of her keystone policies were U-turned on.

Mr Lochhead said: “What we’ve seen from the Conservative Government in recent weeks and months has been beyond shambolic.

“Liz Truss will be remembered as the shortest serving Prime Minister in history and the person who incredibly managed to tank the UK economy in a single day.

"Her tenure may have been short but people in Moray and across the country will live with the damage she’s caused for quite some time.

“Despite the absolute chaos and carnage Liz Truss inflicted on the country Moray’s Tory MP went from being a cheer leader for Boris to backing Truss to the hilt, which will lead many to question his judgement and his values.

"Regardless, he now owes the people of Moray an apology for enthusiastically supporting a budget and a government that has worsened their finances in the midst of a cost of living crisis.

“Ordinary people are paying the price for the complete ineptitude of the Tory Party.

“We need a general election, not yet another unelected Prime Minister. And Scotland needs to get out of this mess.”
