MORAY council has this afternoon unanimously backed plans to replace Lossiemouth Bridge.
A special meeting of the full council today backed proposals to begin appraising the various options for a new bridge.
The council also agreed in principle to take ownership of the bridge once it is complete.
Welcoming the decision the council's leader Graham Leadbitter (Elgin South/SNP) said: "The commitment by the Scottish Government to fund the bridge replacement is fantastic news for Lossiemouth and Moray.
"With funding already secured by the Lossiemouth Community Development Trust set to pay for the options appraisal the future of Lossiemouth’s tourism economy is very bright.
"I commend the efforts of the Lossiemouth community on this hugely important issue for them.
"I am also very pleased that councillors have unanimously backed the project and have committed to progressing the first major stage, which is the options appraisal and have, in principle, agreed to take ownership on completion of the bridge.
"The council has an excellent engineering team who are very capable of managing this work and I look forward to seeing the bridge replacement options that will be identified."
The footbridge to Lossiemouth's East Beach was closed in July when structural engineers ruled it unsafe.
The Scottish government subsequently announced in September that it would pay for a replacement because the beach is a major draw for tourists and significant employment in the town.
