Elgin Sheriff Court heard yesterday (September 14) that Police had searched the home of Tyler Cornes (then 16) on September 7 2022 following an anonymous tip off.

The teenager openly admitted his involvement in the supply of Cannabis and officers discovered a backpack containing 299 grams of Cannabis with a street value of around £1300, along with scales and small bags used for packaging the drugs.

In his defense, solicitor Matthew O'Neill revealed that Cornes, who is now 18, had been struggling during his mid-teenage years and had fallen in with a negative peer group. He said: "He was using Cannabis and had accumulated debts to much older individuals for the substance. At his age and without access to employment, he believed that selling cannabis was his only option. Fortunately, he has made significant progress since then and is currently employed full-time."

Addressing the case, Sheriff Robert McDonald emphasised the seriousness of the charges. He said: "I trust you realise the extent of trouble you have got yourself into – being charged with supplying is a very serious matter and often results in a custodial sentence." However, the Sheriff took into consideration Tyler Cornes' age and sentenced him to 120 hours of unpaid work and a one year supervision order, as a direct alternative to custody.
