THE East Beach Bridge in Lossiemouth was the centre of a "taskforce" meeting yesterday.

The bridge was closed last week after concerns had arisen about the safety of the structure – and it looks unlikely to re-open, causing problems at the peak of tourist season.

A meeting was held in Lossiemouth yesterday, after SNP Council Convener Shona Morrison called for a taskforce to be set up, and the issue was discussed by representatives from the local community and elected members.

After the meeting, Councillor Marc Macrae (Fochabers/Lhanbryde) said: "The closure of the footbridge is very much an issue of concern for both the safety and wellbeing of those using the beach and the economic difficulties small shops and businesses will bear, for could be a considerable period of time, before a solution can be implemented.

"I welcome that local groups are united in their efforts to find a solution and that politicians from across all parties are working at all levels to try and source the right help and assistance.

"There is no easy solution at present, with those wishing to use the East beach safely facing a walk of several miles to Arthur's bridge and back again, not something families or those with young children will be keen to do.

He added: "In June 2018, in support of Councillor Ryan Edwards, we submitted a motion seeking an agreement that the council would support the Lossiemouth Community Development Trust in its campaign to secure continuous pedestrian access to the East beach via the Seatown Bridge, a motion which was carried 17 votes to 3.

"I will continue to back these local groups and to support the wider Moray community which is affected by this bridge closure so that the access can be restored in due course."

SNP MSP Richard Lochhead, who is currently on a family holiday, added: "I have been keeping in touch with community representatives and continue to contact various agencies to help try to find a way forward.

"The closure of the footbridge at the height of tourist season is a big concern for local businesses and, although finding a temporary fix may be a huge challenge, I’m determined we should leave no stone unturned and I will continue to work with the community on short and long term solutions.

"And while Lossiemouth’s footbridge may be closed, the town remains open for business and it is essential that we support the traders in the community."

A public meeting will take place at 7pm tonight in the Lossiemouth Town Hall, with all members of the public welcome to attend and give their views on the closure of the bridge.
