A LOSSIEMOUTH couple celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary with family, friends and a pipe band on Thursday.

Catherine (78) and Ian Wood (82) got married in the town's Stotfield Hotel on November 4, 1961, and marked 60 years of marriage in style.

The couple had a tea party with friends and neighbours, before pipers from Lossiemouth High School played for them in their garden.

On Friday, their daughter Angela arranged a trip to Pennan – where they were met by their grandchildren Andrew and Adele, as well as great grandchildren Jessica and Bella.

Catherine said: "We thought when we had our golden wedding celebrations that was it.

"But it was so nice to have all of our old friends together on Thursday. The pipe band, especially given they were only formed two years ago, were brilliant.

"It was just the most wonderful day and we really did appreciate it."

The couple have always loved visiting Pennan – near Fraserburgh – so were delighted when a 'mystery tour' arranged by their daughter took them there.

They were even more pleased to be joined by their grandson and great granddaughter from Glasgow, who they admitted they haven't seen as often as they'd have liked during coronavirus times.

Ian and Catherine were both born in Lossiemouth and have spent all of their time married in the town.

They had two children, Angela and Dawn Elizabeth, but sadly Dawn Elizabeth died aged just 13.

The couple have been great members of the community throughout the years.

Catherine only recently stepped back from her role as chairperson of Lossiemouth Town Hall after 18 years, while Ian, who was a fisherman by trade, also worked as the hall's janitor.

Catherine was on the committee of the Lossiemouth Twin Town Association for a similar length of time – with Hersbruck in Bavaria becoming the Woods' most regular holiday destination.

She added: "The holiday we enjoyed most was our ruby wedding anniversary trip to Hawaii.

"But we had a big connection with our twin town, Hersbruck.

"We have maybe been there more than 40 times, so it's like a second home for us."
