Since revealing in the paper her battle with Motor Neurone Disease and her fundraising challenge to walk the Speyside Way with friends, Lucy (19) has been overwhelmed by the reaction.

Lucy, from Garmouth, was diagnosed with the progressive and incurable condition last November.

The disease attacks the motor neurones which send messages from the brain to the muscles.

However, the former Milne’s High School pupil refuses to be beaten by the condition and will walk and canoe the 65 miles of the Speyside Way in July to raise funds for MND Scotland to go towards research and support for other sufferers, and also to raise awareness of the condition.

Lucy said: “There has been a really good reaction and everybody has been commenting on the story. It is amazing.

“I got two cards in the post the other day from people who had read my story and donated £150. The fundraising is going great, it is really cool.”

One Elgin resident touched by Lucy’s story came in to ‘The Northern Scot’ offices and donated £130 to her appeal. Many others have been donating online.

A friend at Milne’s High School, Rebecca Whitworth, who was in the Scouts with Lucy, has also organised a ‘Come as You Please’ day at the school in support of Lucy’s efforts and is planning another event in the community.
