The Dr Gray’s Advanced Airway Workshop, held at the Alexander Graham Bell Conference Centre at Moray College UHI, was organised by a doctor from the Elgin hospital and involved a team of 20 international airway experts.

The former president of the Difficult Airway Society (DAS) UK, Dr Jairaj Rangasami; former DAS secretary Dr Subrahmanyan Radhakrishna, and Dr Sudheer Medakkar, who has been key in contributing to the current guidelines produced by the society, were all in attendance. Most of the experts who ran the workshop were from the Wexham Airway Group.

Michele Fischer, support manager for surgical services at Dr Gray’s, said that the event had been a major coup for the area.

She said: “This is the first time that a workshop of this type has been held in the North-east of Scotland. The Wexham Airway Group have arranged workshops like this in England, and also abroad in India, Africa and Eastern Europe.

“International companies ensured that the latest essential equipment was available on the day for demonstration and for the 50 delegates to use.

“This provided an opportunity to see the different devices and video-assisted tools being used to secure a difficult airway. Several of the six practical workshop stations were based on the skills of airway management, which provided everybody with a ‘hands-on’ opportunity to practise and boost their professional confidence.

“This locally organised Dr Gray’s Advanced Airway Workshop enabled a significant number of NHS Grampian staff to attend, which boosted both morale and expertise.”

Ms Fischer said the Alexander Graham Bell Centre was an ideal venue for the workshop, and provided a “wonderful space” that enhanced the learning experience.
