THE Ministry of Defence has invested more than £1million to expand the floorspace at the RAF Lossiemouth childcare centre to ensure the facility is Covid-19 compliant.

The RAF Lossie childcare centre provides full day care for children aged between three months and 12 years old, with 140 children attending daily.

Many Armed Forces families struggle to access childcare to cover the hours they work and their posting to Moray often means extended family can’t provide help.

Children from different schools and age groups are limited with how they can mix in out-of-school care, which has resulted in young users spending winter outside in all weathers in their school bubbles.

This new on-site extension will provide children and hard-working staff with a purpose-designed indoor facility.

Sarah Riley-Evans, head of RAF Lossiemouth’s communications and engagement team, said: “RAF Lossiemouth is delighted that the Directorate of Children and Young People is investing over £1million to ensure our parents can continue to access affordable and accessible childcare.

"Covid-19 has created many challenges but the commitment and innovation of the team on site is just remarkable.

"We must thank all involved in the project for pulling it together so quickly. We look forward to seeing the end building open.”

Work will start immediately with the planned construction period expected to take just eight weeks, using a prefabricated facility.

Normal childcare will be unaffected for the period of the build.
