The Ministry of Defence is objecting to plans to build a new windfarm on The Cabrach due to fears it could endanger low-flying RAF jets.

MoD says extra turbines pose potential danger to low-flying jets.
MoD says extra turbines pose potential danger to low-flying jets.

Proposals for what’s called the Clashindarroch Extension Wind Farm would see 22 turbines built, each with a maximum blade height of 196 metres.

However the site lays within a training area used by RAF Lossiemouth in which where jets operate as low as 76.2 metres.

Cabrach locals say they can spot aircraft such as Hawks, Typhoons and Hercules on an almost daily basis.

The MoD’s objection, which has been lodged as part of the planning process, states: “The Cabrach’s unique combination of landscape and low population numbers makes it a critical defence asset for RAF training.

“Close examination of the proposal has indicated that the proposed turbines would have a significant and detrimental effect on air defence operations.”

The MoD is also concerned the turbines would interfere with the RAF’s radar station at Buchan, nearly 50 miles away, by creating ‘false aircraft returns’, which might hamper the UK’s security.

The area currently plays host to 77 turbines operating at two wind farms – Dorenell and the Clashindarroch.

Together they produce enough energy to power 133,000 homes, which is three times the number of houses across the whole of Moray.

Permission was recently given to build seven turbines at Garbet Hill, which is about four miles south-east of Dufftown.

Another14 turbines received approval at the outcome of a public inquiry in June last year for the Clashindarroch II Wind Farm .

Added to are the ongoing proposals for the separate Clashindarroch Extension Wind Farm, as well as plans to extend the Craig Watch Wind Farm near Dufftown.

If fully consented, these schemes would form the largest collection of windfarms in the UK.

Euan Cameron, a member of Saving The Cabrach, said: “The landscape and topography of The Cabrach is rare and special.

“This rural community has already reached saturation point when it comes to wind energy generation.

“There is no reason why we should start to interfere with such an important and strategic space for our national security efforts in favour of obtuse net zero targets.”

Douglas Ross, Moray’s MP, called on the Scottish Government to reject the Clashindarroch extension.

He said: "The Cabrach has already seen a number of new wind turbines approved and there is understandable and growing opposition to this third wave of new wind farm developments, like this application.

"I hope the views and objections of the local community and consultees such as the MOD are not only heard, but also acted on, and this latest application is refused."
