Proof that not everything was better in the good old days.

This is how, on September 15, 1973, The Northern Scot reported an outbreak of football hooliganism at a local game.

UGLY crowd scenes – seven arrests were made – marred Saturday's Highland League Cup final between County and Keith at the Borough Briggs ground in Elgin.

Terracing trouble broke out behind the Ross County goal shortly before the interval when cans and bottles were thrown onto the pitch.

Referee Frank Phillips held up the game temporarily and called in the uniformed police who moved into the bank of young fans behind the County goal area.

Almost immediately afterwards the nastiest incidents occurred at the opposite end of the pitch where a running battle developed between rival fans.

Plain clothes policemen were at the part of the enclosure and a number of people were arrested.

On Monday seven fans appeared from custody at Elgin Sheriff Court when the two dealt with were fined £40 and £25 respectively on a number of charges.
