MORAY Active Schools has helped pupils achieve an accredited qualification – after a successful bid for funding.

The service received funding from the Tesco Bags for Life scheme, as well as from the Go Live Get Active Fund, allocated via Moray Community Sports Hub.

Moray Active Schools, which provides extra-curricular sport activities for young people, chose to invest in supporting young people to work towards the accredited Sports Leaders UK Dance Leader Course qualification.

Thirteen Moray teenagers spent a week of their summer holidays attending classes at Elgin Community Centre, where Sharon Henderson of SH Dance, Keith, taught them how to teach dance.

The group had experience in a range of dance styles including disco, ballet, contemporary and street.

During the week they worked on communication, session planning and event planning skills. They also each took a turn at coaching the group, teaching a style of their choice.

To achieve their qualification, each participant is now in the process of delivering 10 hours of dance sessions in the local community, with the help of their Active Schools Co-ordinator. On November 12, they will come together as a group one last time to lead each other in their chosen dance style, all the while being observed and assessed by tutor Sharon.

Moray Active Schools' activities are mainly delivered by volunteers, meaning the sessions can be provided free of charge – thereby making it easier for all to take part. Active Schools works closely with secondary school pupils who choose to volunteer their time with the service, providing support and mentorship where needed.
