A NEW contemporary art gallery in Forres is staging an exhibition by a Moray School of Art graduate who missed out on holding a physical degree show last year due to pandemic restrictions.

Corrine Marshall, 28, originally from Glasgow, is relishing the chance to finally exhibit her Lights, Camera … ReAction video installation at Gallery Pop, a new gallery and exhibition space which opened in Forres town centre on June 1.

Corrine studied BA Fine Art at Moray School of Art. She said: "The show is what would have been my degree show for June 2021. However, due to Covid this was restricted to a purely online submission.

"This proved to be quite a challenge for students, so it has been an amazing opportunity and experience to finally install work in a physical setting now that restrictions continue to be lifted."

The SSA award winner was invited to show her work at Gallery Pop by owner Georgina Porteous.

Lights, Camera … ReAction features video installations which deal with issues surrounding Corrine's life growing up in a strict religious household for 21 years.

Corrine said: "I compare such control with the manipulation of women in the media, referring to the 'Me Too' movement.

"By confronting themes of child abuse and violence against women within the film industry, my work draws attention to the impact such trauma has on the body.

"My motivation in uncovering such issues derives from my life growing up within a strict religious household.

"By correlating religious repression with female coercion in today’s media, I hope to raise awareness of the destructive hold such upbringings can have on individuals as well as the damaging effects this may have on victims' childhoods and social structures."

The artist added: "The exhibition has been a really good experience and very necessary as the show is the highlight of a four-year course, so it's great to see people's reactions and engage with them.

"What we've found is – and this may be connected to Covid and isolation – a lot of people open up, as the work is quite emotional, and they talk about their own background and experiences."

Georgina describes Gallery Pop as a first for the area as the only non-profit contemporary art exhibition space on a high street in Moray or the Highlands.

She said: "We are an international platform for contemporary art and we will support a new graduate every year."

Lights, Camera … ReAction will run at Gallery Pop until Saturday, August 7.

The gallery is open from 10am to 3.45pm, Tuesday to Saturday, at 44 High Street.
