A MORAY schoolboy is preparing to chop off his lengthy locks to make life a little easier for young cancer sufferers.

Finlay Stuart (11) was teased when he started to grow his hair long two-and-a-half years ago.

But the Lhanbryde Primary pupil said attitudes changed when he decided to help out the Little Princess Trust, which makes real hair wigs for children who have lost their own hair through cancer treatment or other conditions.

Finlay, whose hair is now more than 10 inches long and sits just above his waist, said: "At the start, I just wanted to grow my hair because I felt like that is what I wanted to do.

"Then, I saw a posted about the Trust and decided to keep going so I could help them.

"At the start, I did get a bit of hate for it. But when they realised what I was doing it for, they stopped."

Wielding the scissors for Finlay's big act of kindness will be mum Alison, who previously worked as a hairdresser.

And the big chop will take place during a Family Fun Day they have organised, taking place at Lhanbryde Village Hall.

As well as Strathisla Inflatable Fun, there will be stalls, attractions, food and refreshments, with money raised going to Cancer Research UK.

Finlay, who lives in Urquhart, said: "I chose Cancer Research because it covers all types of cancer. There is a lot going on, there will be a raffle, bouncy castle and lots to do."

As for the haircut, he admitted to being excited and a little apprehensive at the same time.

But he added: "It gets sent to the Little Princess Trust and they then organise it and make wigs, so it will be worth it."

Established in 2006, the charity has now supplied over 8000 wigs to children and young people and have invested around £5 million into childhood cancer research.

The Family Fun Day, to which everyone is welcome, takes place on August 17 and runs from noon to 4pm.

The big chop is being carried out by Finlay's mum Alison and will take place at at Family Fun Day.
