AN AFTERNOON of cocktails and canapes along with beer and bhajis has raised just under £1700 for local charities.

Rotary Elgin hosted the fundraising afternoon as part of the inaugural Rotafun weekend, held in Elgin's Cooper Park in June.

Now, the money raised from the afternoon social will help local good causes.

President Margaret Stenton said: "Rotary Elgin are delighted to award Abbie's Sparkle Foundation £1465 and Elgin Youth Cafe £200, representing the net proceeds realised from their Afternoon T in the Park style event held last month.

"This inaugural event was held in the Robertson Marquee, and ticket sales for Beer & Bhaji's (supported by Qismat and Windswept Brewery) and Cocktails & Canapé (donations from El-Gin, Chivas and Asda) sold out quickly.

"Volunteers from Abbie's Sparkle and Rotary Elgin worked together to look after the guests, and a fun afternoon was had by all, with dancing to live music, courtesy of MacTa."

The afternoon celebration kick-started a weekend of activities in Cooper Park, which included a 5-mile run and family afternoon packed with attractions and activities.

Mrs Stenton said: "It was great for Rotary to work in partnership with other charities and we were very grateful for the support generously given by local businesses.

"We were delighted to have such a wide ranging demographic supporting the event.

"Feedback has been hugely positive and encouraging and I'm confident that an event like this will be repeated in the years ahead."
