Moray residents are charged the joint-highest in Scotland for garden waste permits
BIN permit charges in Moray are now the joint highest in Scotland.
Last year, local councillors voted in favour of a 39 per cent increase to the charge for green waste bin permits for 2024, with charges rising from £36 to £50.
The increase means that Moray Council now charge the highest amount for a garden waste permit in Scotland, along with East Renfrewshire and Glasgow City.
Neighbouring Highland Council and Aberdeen City both charge less than Moray Council, with Aberdeen offering two brown bins for a single £30 permit, while areas like Fife are free.
The new data was revealed by the Moray Liberal Democrats, Moray Lib Dem leader, Neil Alexander, has criticised the decision saying that the increase cuts deep during the cost-of-living crisis and will lead to more issues with fly tipping in the area
Neil, who is also a selection candidate for the Moray West, Nairn & Strathspey constituency at this year’s election, said: “Yellow and blue, successive council leaderships have failed to give Moray residents a fair waste disposal service. How can our neighbouring councils in the Highlands and Aberdeen give local people a better deal than we can in Moray?
“Fly-tipping is already a known issue in the area, and this massive increase will just drive more people to take matters into their own hands during a cost-of-living crisis."
Moray Liberal Democrats are calling for Moray Council to either remove the charge completely or reduce the rate to match neighbouring areas.
