The national awareness and thanksgiving day, taking place today (October, 19), commemorates the hard work of emergency services personnel in the UK.

A flag raising ceremony attended by councillors, senior staff and emergency services representatives was followed by a two minutes silence.

More than 7500 emergency service personnel have been killed as a result of their service.

Moray Council Civic Leader councillor John Cowe said: “It’s important we mark our annual chance to thank those individuals who dedicate their lives to working and volunteering in the NHS and emergency services.

“Emergency service personnel often go above and beyond, while putting themselves in great danger, to protect us on a daily basis. It’s likely we all know someone who has been impacted by the emergency services in some way and I give my thanks on behalf of Moray Council.”

The UK-wide awareness day also showcases support for those working and volunteering in emergency services.

Usually held on September 9, this year’s day of remembrance and thanksgiving was postponed due to the passing of Her Majesty The Queen.

Cllr Cowe was joined at the ceremony by Council leader councillor Kathleen Robertston, Council deputy chief executive Rhona Gunn, representatives from Moray and Banffshire’s Lord Lieutenancy and from the emergency services in Moray including Police Scotland; Scottish Fire and Rescue Service; Scottish Ambulance Service; HM Coastguard; and NHS Scotland.
