THE relief fund designed to support people facing financial hardship because of the Coronavirus now stands at more than £50,000.

That amount has been donated in the space of just 10 days.

The Lord Lieutenant of Moray, Maj Gen Seymour Monro, who jointly launched the fund with his Banffshire counterpart Andy Simpson, thanked all those who have made a donation.

"That is an amazing amount of money. I want to say thank you to everybody who has contributed so generously, individuals and businesses," said Mr Monro.

And the number of applicants who have already been helped has moved into double figures, with most applications being in the region of low hundreds of pounds.

"A lot of them have come from single parent families who have lost jobs and are waiting for Universal Credit to kick in, exactly the kind of people the fund was meant to help.

"I would encourage more people to apply for funds if they are in real need. We are getting the money out to people inside 48 hours."

And Mr Monro has also issued an appeal for donations of second hand laptops and printers, with many of the applicants saying they would like laptops or compuers for children, often who have special needs.

Details of any donations of these items should be sent to gsj@spyniekirkhouse.co.uk.

When people donate money they are asked to send in the donation form so the trustees know who has donated and sign the Gift Aid form which adds a further 25% in value to the donation.

Donations can be made by bank transfer to the Royal Bank of Scotland, High Street, Elgin: sort code: 83-20-06; account no: 16104382.

Printed versions of the application and donation forms can be found in last Friday's print version of The Northern Scot (April 17) and online at www.moray.gov.uk
