Richard Lochhead has written to the boss of the fire service to make sure all crews in Moray are properly supported and equipped.

The region's MSP visited Fochabers Fire Station this week to meet the retained crew as they were holding one of their regular training sessions.

During his visit he paid tribute to local firefighters and thanked them for the work they do to keep people safe.

Speaking afterwards, Mr Lochhead said: "I was absolutely delighted to meet the retained crew at Fochabers Fire Station and to have the opportunity to thank them for the outstanding job they do.

"Retained crews like the one at Fochabers have to be available at a moment’s notice, serving our communities in addition to their own work and family commitments.

"We owe them a huge debt of gratitude.

"The station made its own bit of history last year when Jane Hay was the first woman to join the retained crew at Fochabers.

"It was good to meet Jane and to hear about her experience of the job – she’s a real role model for young girls and women in her community.

"There’s no doubt that there are new and emerging challenges facing retained crews across Moray, particularly the increasing occurrence of wild fires in the region.

"I’ve now written to the Chief Officer seeking an update on investment in Moray to ensure that our local crews are well supported and equipped to deal with these new challenges."
