Four new Deputy Lord Lieutenants for Moray have been appointed.

The appointments, which have been confirmed by the Queen, are Joan Cowe from Lossiemouth, Alan James from Forres, John Stuart who lives at Darnaway and Margaret Stenton from Mosstowie.

Joan has been working at Anderson’s Care Home in Elgin for nearly 40 years.

With her husband, councillor John Cowe, she played a major part in the development and marketing of ‘Pride of Scotland’ smoked salmon and founded the Seafest food and drink festival in Lossiemouth.

Joan said: "It is a huge honour and a privilege to be appointed a Deputy Lieutenant of Moray and I very much look forward to being part of the team and supporting the Lord Lieutenant.

"This is an exciting though somewhat daunting role but I accept the challenge and look forward to serving the people of Moray to the very best of my ability."

Alan founded AJ Engineering in 1998, which has grown into an international engineering firm employing over 80 people, many of them apprentices.

He was a founder member and later chairman of the Forres Events board which ran the successful European Pipe Band Championships in Forres from 2013 to 2018.

Alan said: "I am honoured and delighted to have been asked to be a Deputy Lieutenant of Moray.

"I now look forward to assisting the Lieutenancy of Moray and in particular supporting the Forres area community and working with the local councillors."

John is the 21st Earl of Moray. A progressive landowner, he has actively diversified into renewable energies, the Castle Stuart Golf Links and the new town of Tornagrain.

He is a sponsor of many local charities and events, and is a member of Forres Rotary.

John said: "It is a great honour to have been asked to be a Deputy Lieutenant of Moray.

"I very much look forward to being part of the team that supports the Lord-Lieutenant with his valuable work in Moray."

After a distinguished career in banking, Margaret is now a trustee of The Gordon and Ena Baxter Foundation and is actively involved in its work supporting organisations and charities within Moray and the Highlands.

She is the current president of the Rotary Club of Elgin.

Margaret said: "I am already very active in the community through rotary and the Gordon and Ena Baxter Foundation.

"I see my new role as an opportunity to further extend the work and support I can offer within Moray, particularly during this very difficult crisis and beyond."

All four will support the work of the Lord-Lieutenant in Moray, Major General Seymour Monro, who has recently spearheaded the launch of the Moray Emergency Relief Fund.

This fund has raised over £100,000 in just three weeks to support those in need from the C-19 pandemic.

Seymour said: "All these four have done so much in so many different ways over the years.

"They will be a great asset to our Lieutenancy team at this time of pandemic when we need to be up to strength to working alongside councillors, our communities and local businesses.

"They have all already been playing a proactive role in this lockdown situation, and I know will become outstanding Deputy Lieutenants."
