A NEW book by Scottish historian James Hunter, which talks about a crisis which gripped Moray in 1846, will be released on Thursday, October 10.
Blockaded harbours, grain trade brought to a standstill and a force of 140 heavily armed soldiers confronted by ‘the whole female population’ of Garmouth are just a few of the outcomes of the crisis which are discussed in Insurrection: Scotland’s Famine Winter.
Moray was at the centre of the crisis, which controlled large swathes of the north of Scotland and now, thanks to James Hunter, these dramatic events have been brought vividly to life.
Jim Hunter, former award winning journalist and professor of history at the University of the Highlands and Islands, has written extensively about the Scottish north and about the region’s worldwide diaspora. His last book, Set Adrift Upon the World: The Sutherland Clearances (Birlinn), was Saltire History Book of the Year in 2016.
The book, published by Scotland's biggest publisher Birlinn, will be available for £20 after release.
