An 85-year-old man from Moray has admitted sexually assaulting a female hairdresser.

James MacDonald went to a salon in the area on either Thursday, August 4 or Friday, August 5.

The hairdresser told him that his appointment wasn't until the following week, to which the pensioner replied that he'd come to see her rather than to get his hair cut.

Elgin Sheriff Court heard that MacDonald then gave her a present – a paper bag containing some tomatoes.

After this he leaned over and tried to remove a hair which was stuck to her lip gloss.

She remarked: "Look at you, trying to look after me."

To which, MacDonald replied: "I would like to do more than that."

Fiscal depute Shamiela Ghafar told the court that the woman took this to be a sexual comment.

At this point the pensioner then tried to hug the woman, after which he grabbed hold of her breasts, causing her pain.

Ms Ghafar described the victim as feeling "violated and physically sick" following the assault.

The court heard that she went to the back of the salon until MacDonald left.

MacDonald, who lives in St Catherine's Place, Elgin, pleaded guilty to one charge of sexual assault.

The case was adjourned for a month until February 16, to allow social workers to prepare a pre-sentence report.

In the meantime, Sheriff Olga Pasportnikov placed MacDonald on the Sex Offenders Register with immediate effect.
