Elgin Sheriff Court heard that Mark Sweeney (50) of Mid Street Keith, assaulted a man who had allegedly attacked women at the Commercial Hotel in Keith on April 3 last year.

Police officers, upon arriving on the scene, noted a 'small laceration' on the man's head.

After initially assisting officers, he became hostile and insisted that he had not been assaulted.

However, CCTV footage showed otherwise and revealed Sweeney to be the perpetrator.

Officers traced Sweeney to his home in Keith where he accepted full responsibility for the incident before being cautioned and charged.

Sweeney, who represented himself at Elgin Sheriff Court on Thursday, told Sheriff Olga Pasportnikov that his actions had been in response to the man hitting women.

He said: "I'm not one for standing back and watching women get hit."

Sheriff Pasportnikov said that his actions had "not been acceptable" regardless of the context behind them.

His sentence was deferred until October 5 for good behaviour.
