A pub goer who grabbed the buttocks of a policewoman in the mistaken belief that she was a stripper has appeared in court.

William Coghill sexually assaulted the female police officer on Saturday, June 10, while she was carrying out a routine check at the Ionic Bar on Elgin High Street.

Speaking at Elgin Sheriff Court today, the 64-year-old's solicitor stated that his client was "deeply embarrassed and remorseful" about what he'd done.

Stephen Carty added: "He was mortified by his actions. It was completely foolish."

Coghill, whose address was given in court papers as of Murdoch's Wynd, Elgin, was put under the court's supervision for the next 12 months

Sheriff Olga Pasportnikov also placed him on the sex offenders register for the same period.

During an earlier hearing at the same court last month it was stated that Coghill had been drinking with his wife in the pub when the offence took place.

Procurator Fiscal Victoria Silver said: "Constables were carrying out checks at the Ionic Bar and William Coghill was drinking with his wife and friends.

"Coghill grabbed a constable on the buttocks with both hands. When she turned round to confront him, he said 'I thought you were a stripper'.

"Coghill was clearly under the influence of alcohol, stumbling and slurring his words.

"He was then escorted from the premises and said 'I'm very sorry, it was drunken and stupid'."
