A flurry of activity as a flock of dunlin sweep over the Moray Firth.

.

The dunlin is a small wader that winters in Africa or the south of Spain.

It employs a characteristic ‘sewing machine’ action when feeding on coastal mudflats, methodically picking up small insects, molluscs, worms and crustaceans.

Dunlin nests are a shallow scrape upon the ground lined with vegetation, into which typically four eggs are laid.

The chicks start to fly at approximately three weeks of age. The majority of brood care is provided by the male, as the female often leaves the breeding area.
