MORAY MP Douglas Ross has said that Liz Truss's resignation is the correct choice.

Announced earlier this afternoon outside Downing Street, Liz Truss's resignation makes her the shortest-reigning Prime Minister in history.

During the leadership campaign, Scottish Conservative leader Mr Ross welcomed Ms Truss to the Benriach distillery near Elgin and has previously praised several of her policies.

After Ms Truss became Prime Minister, Mr Ross also celebrated her plan to freeze alcohol duty – which was later scrapped.

Speaking immediately after the announcement, Mr Ross said: "I wish Liz Truss and her family well.

"No matter where you stand on her decisions as Prime Minister, politics can be very tough on people personally.

"It's only a few weeks since Liz was in Moray during the Leadership campaign but she has now made a difficult decision but it is the correct one.

"There were no other options after the events of recent weeks.

"We must now move forward quickly with the election of a new Leader and Prime Minister to restore stability for the good of the country.

"It is vital that the Conservative and Unionist Party unites and continues the hard work of getting the whole of the UK through the big challenges we face."

Liz Truss was in office for 45 days, during which her "mini budget" collapsed due to market pressure; Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng resigned and was replaced by Jeremy Hunt; nearly all of her keystone policies were U-turned on; and she lost trusted advisor Jason Stein.

This was before last night's chaotic scenes at Westminster, around the resignation of Home Secretary Suella Braverman; confusion over a fracking bill which was apparently a "confidence motion"; and rumours around the resignation of the Conservative Chief Whip and Deputy Chief Whip.
