BOB Black has looked into more eyes than most people have had hot dinners over the last 30 years, but it could just have easily been mouths.

Elgin optometrist Mr Black (60) retired last weekend with the local branch of Duncan and Todd Opticians.

However, he revealed that his original ambition was to be a dentist.

“I started doing dentistry at Glasgow University but after a year decided it was not for me,” he said.

Moray-born Mr Black went on to study optometry at Glasgow College of Technology (now Glasgow Caledonia University).

His father was one of nine children and worked on a farm at Lossiemouth. Their home in those early years was the building that is now the stables block at RAF Lossiemouth.

However, there was not enough work on the farm for everybody, and his father moved his family to Glasgow where he joined the police.

However, a young Mr Black still enjoyed regular childhood holidays back in Moray, at Mains of Cotts, Lhanbryde, where his grandfather farmed.

After completing his university studies, the new graduate worked for an opticians in Kirkintilloch for five years, before starting with Duncan and Todd.
