Douglas Ross and Richard Lochhead joined local residents and campaigners yesterday (Tuesday, April 11) outside of the Moray Coast Medical Centre in Lossiemouth.

The protest was organised by the Save Our Surgeries group who are campaigning against the closures of the GP surgeries in the villages of Burghead and Hopeman.

After the protest Douglas Ross said: “It was clear from the consultation that the overwhelming majority of respondents wanted the Burghead and Hopeman surgeries to remain open.

“This position was reiterated by the numbers turning out to show opposition to the plans to keep these surgeries closed.

“I’ve met with the campaign group and have been bitterly disappointed with the responses I’ve received from the Health Secretary and officials.

“There is a clear and compelling case to save these surgeries and I fully support the local campaigners and will do everything I can to help their efforts.”

Moray's MSP Richard Lochhead also attended the event and spoke with local residents and campaigners about their concerns.

Mr. Lochhead said: “The coastal communities of Burghead and Hopeman are sending a loud and clear message to the health authorities that the centralisation of local GP services must be avoided and other solutions explored.

“As local MSP, I am urging the local doctors and NHS authorities to sit down with the community and work out a solution that allows GP surgeries to continue in the coastal villages and for a plan to be developed that allows that to happen.”
