All schools in Moray could close on Monday, May 8 to celebrate the coronation of King Charles III two days beforehand.

The coronation is taking place in Westminster Abbey on Saturday, May 6.

Moray's education will next decide next week whether to ask permission from the Scottish Government to reduce the number of teaching days from 190 to 189.

If the exemption is granted it would allow all schools in Moray to close on Monday, May 8, giving teachers and pupils an extra day off.

That date has already been earmarked as an additional bank holiday to mark the event by the UK and Scottish governments.

Schools were closed and council staff received a day-off for a bank holiday to mark the Queen’s funeral in September.

Similar arrangements were also made for the platinum jubilee in June last year, the golden jubilee in 2012 and the royal wedding the year before that.

The education will debate the matter at its next meeting on Wednesday, January 25.

However, another branch of the council – the corporate committee – will have to agree as well before any approach is made to the Scottish Government.

The corporate committee will also consider a separate report on whether to grant all council staff the day off at its next meeting on Tuesday, January 31.
