A MORAY sportsman who is set to represent his country in May has been recognised for his hard work on a local scale.

Weightlifter Graeme Reid, from Aberlour, will travel to Kazakhstan in May to represent Team GB – but the teacher won an award much closer to home in Elgin on Thursday.

Graeme, who works as part of Moray Council's Social Emotional Behavioural Needs (SEBN) team, won the Secondary Teacher Award at the Moray and Banffshire Heroes Awards.

But the former Forres Academy teacher wasn't even expecting to be nominated.

He said: "When I was phoned I thought it was a wind up. I told them on the phone that I tell the jokes around here!

"I was very flattered, it was an honour. Obviously you don't do your work to get awards, but this is recognition for the whole team.

"I've been with the SEBN team for three years so I'm delighted to take this award on behalf of them."

Graeme had some kind words for Cath Reilly and Stewart Clelland, the two runners-up for the award.

He added: "I know them both well and it's an honour to be in the company of these guys, because I know what good they do in their communities.

"I'm really flattered to even be considered alongside them. I'm delighted to have won but it's an award for all education staff in Moray."
