A group of Moray youngsters turned to dance to get them through the darkest days of the full lockdown earlier this year.

Over the course of several weeks the team of ten young dancers each separately filmed themselves in action with the help of their families.

That footage by the Dance North Youth Company has now been turned into a short film, which can be viewed here.

One of the dancers was 13-year-old Forres Academy student Alana Coutts.

Her footage was shot on a mobile phone by her mum Lesley, who says: "We both really got into it.

"At one point I even ended up riding a quad bike so I could keep up with Alana.

"On another occasion I was lying flat on my back to film her twirling around against the sky."

Alana agreed: "The finished film looks great and it was a lot of fun to make."

In charge of editing together all the dancer's individual footage was Gail Sneddon, Dance North's development officer.

She said: "It was created during the strictest period of national lockdown, demonstrating exceptional commitment from the young dancers who were willingly giving up their one hour of exercise to work on the films.

"The theme of the film became the short phrase, 'I escaped darkness to get to me'.

"Each week the dancers had to make up and film a routine based around a segment of that phrase.

"It's great they were able to make something creative and exciting from the situation.

"I know it helped take everyone's minds off the isolation of lockdown, when they weren't allowed to meet their friends."

The Dance North Youth Company is based in Findhorn and offers the chance to work both with resident and visiting choreographers.

It's open to any young dancers aged between 12 and 19 who have at least three year's of dancing experience and would like to develop both their artistic and creative skills.
