Her resignation, announced yesterday, makes her the shortest-serving Prime Minister in British history with only a 45-day premiership.

Moray's Conservative, SNP and Labour groups were united that stepping down was the right decision.

However, the groups disagreed on what needed to happen now.

Head of Moray Council's Conservative group councillor Kathleen Robertson emphasised the importance of the national party settling on a new leader quickly.

She said: "Ultimately Liz Truss has made the right decision, though I know how tough it will have been for her.

"I know how hard politics can be on people personally so I send every best wish to her and her family moving forward.

"Leading Moray Council I know the challenges our communities, people, businesses and services are facing right now.

"It is imperative that all layers of Government work together and support people through these very difficult times.

"That's why it is crucial the Conservative and Unionist Party unite and choose a new leader and Prime Minister quickly and carry on the work of supporting people right across Moray."

Joint leader of the SNP group councillor Graham Leadbitter was furious at the situation.

He used the opportunity to promote independence as an alternative to political turbulence at Westminster.

He said: "It is utter chaos at the heart of the Tory Party that is destabilising our economy and causing pain for people and public services the length and breadth of the country.

"It is utterly unacceptable and there must be a General Election so ordinary voters can choose the direction they want to go in.

"Frankly the quicker Scotland gets independence, the quicker we will get the Government we vote for.”

Councillor Sandy Keith, on behalf of Moray's Labour group echoed Cllr Leadbitter's anger, but said the best solution was a Labour general election win.

He said: “I’ve never witnessed such a shambles in my lifetime, and I doubt anyone else has.

"It’s clear that the Conservatives are unfit to govern, and the only way out of this mess is an immediate general election.

"We’re ready to fight an election and Keir Starmer is ready to lead a new Labour government to bring stability to the country and restore trust in our government.”
