The amount of money available to those who look after other people's children is likely to increase in Moray.

Expectations are that the council, next week, will adopt a new nationwide scale for foster and kinship carers’ allowance.

The introduction of the Scottish Recommended Allowance (SRA) will set the minimum levels payable.

At the moment the weekly rate in Moray is around £142 for a child aged up to four, £163 up to 10, £203 up to 15, and £246 for those 16 and over.

Those levels will rise to £168 for the youngest category and £268 for the oldest.

Meanwhile a new £196 rate will be set for all children aged between five and 15, meaning a fall in some cases and a rise in others.

The Scottish Government has committed cash so that any increases can be backdated to April.

A council report states: "The SRA is intended to cover the cost of supporting a child such as clothing, food and after school activities.

"Although the policy of providing such allowances to foster and kinship carers is not new … having a minimum national allowance is a new policy.”

The proposed change will be discussed by the council on Tuesday.
