The go-ahead has been given to a multi-million pound project to "remodel and rebuild" Aberlour Distillery.

Planning permission was granted this morning for Chivas Brothers to build a new boiler house, tun room and mash room at the four-hectare site.

Huge windows will also be installed as part of a new still house, which will allow visitors to look out onto nearby woods

A new parking area and extensive landscaping are also planned, while a footbridge will be built to lead visitors over the burn and towards the distillery.

The plans were given the go-ahead by Moray Council's planning committee.

The committee's chairman, David Bremner (Fochabers/Lhanbryde, SNP) stated the proposals marked a huge vote of confidence in Moray’s whisky industry.

He said: "I welcome this significant investment in Aberlour Distillery for the benefit of our local economy.

"It will support local jobs and enhance the experience for the many thousands of visitors who are attracted to the region for the world-famous Speyside whisky brand."

Cllr Bremner added that Chivas had strived to make sure the development is sympathetic to the landscape.
