ELGIN Academy will be the venue for a brand-new brass day event hosted by an Edinburgh-based music school.

The Lower Brass Day event will take place on Sunday, February 25 and will be held in hopes of inspiring the next generation of brass players, while also hoping to raise the profile of, and interest in, lesser-available brass instruments.

The event – run by St Mary’s Music School – is free to attend and will also likely to see an expansion of instruments in Elgin to be made available to students who are eager to learn.

St Mary’s first phase called the ‘instrument library’ saw the school purchase endangered instruments which could be loaned to students for up to three years.

The Edinburgh school has also partnered with some of the best players from across the country to teach, play and demonstrate to everyone who attends.

Many instruments will be on show on the day, including the trombone, euphonium, tenor and baritone horns, and tuba.

Instruments will be supplied by French manufacturers, Buffet Crampon, and professionals including Martin Thomson, Danielle Price, John Kenny, Jonathan Gawn, Oren Marshall, Arlene Macfarlane and Emily White will be in attendance.

Euan Meikle, sales manager for Buffet Crampon in the UK and Ireland, said: “I look forward to presenting the 'come and play' experience, which aims to give attendees the opportunity to view a demonstration and play an instrument.”

The day will also consist of concerts, ensemble work, masterclasses and presentations to all those in attendance.

St Mary’s director of music, John Cameron, said: “We are excited to be working with leading brass professionals from across the UK in providing free access to days of activities to celebrate the world of lower brass.”

The day will also see the winner of St Mary’s competition for composers aged 10-18 across Scotland perform their winning fanfare piece.
