Wildlife in Moray: Name this type of bird

Hazel Thomson took the photo seen below of a woodpecker while it was keeping a watchful eye out in Spynie Woods.

The woodpecker's famous drumming is mainly a territorial call, with male birds doing it more frequently than females.

Each species has a unique pattern of drum roll, which varies in the number of beats and its length.

Woodpeckers choose a surface that resonates.

Usually that's a hollow tree, however they also sometimes use man-made structures such as gutters and drainpipes.

The drumming also plays a part in courtship rituals.

Individual birds are thought to be able to distinguish the drumming of their mates and that of their neighbours.
