Loopallu launch for Gaelic music video competition

FILM-MAKERS and musicians are being invited to get together to enter the music video category in this year’s FilmG competition.

Since its launch in 2008, FilmG, MG Alba’s Gaelic Short Film Competition, has encouraged both young people and adults to pick up their cameras and explore their creative talents in conjunction with the use of the Gaelic language.

The FilmG music video competition requires entrants to submit a three to five minute music video which includes Gaelic lyrics.

This can be a completely new song or a reinterpretation of an existing song.

The video competition was launched at this year’s Loopallu Festival in Ullapool by singer-songwriter Dòmhnall Eòghainn MacKinnon, who won a number of awards for his entry in last year’s FilmG competition.

"It is a great idea to add music videos to the list of film genres as it provides an opportunity for storytelling across platforms, encouraging collaborations between songwriters, musicians and filmmakers," he said.

"Winning the FilmG Music Video Competition last year has given me the confidence to continue developing my skills as a filmmaker."

FilmG Project Manager Flòraidh Forrest believes this year’s FilmG theme, "Rùn — Love, Intent or Secret", lends itself well to making Gaelic music videos.

"‘Rùn’ is a common theme running through many existing Gaelic songs, you only need to Google the word and you’ll uncover lots of songs that use rùn, usually in reference to love," she said.

"We hope that many people take inspiration from Dòmhnall Eòghainn and decide to have some fun and try their hand at creating a short music video."
