A CELEBRATION of languages was the order of the day at Buckie Community High School (BCHS) recently.

It was time for the students to let their talents run free when the school marked the annual European Week of Languages in style.

There was certainly plenty on the go, as PT modern languages Catherine Eadon explained.

She said: "We have been spoilt this year!

"Mackenzie Miller (S6) who is doing Advanced Higher German and Higher French and is preparing for the Language Leaders Award planned and led all European Day of Languages [EDL] activities for the Broad General Education [classes]. This included banners, posters, a European Book and a lesson in Ukrainian.

"In addition to that, we also had our annual European-themed bake off with more entries than ever and lessons in Mandarin from our Confucius teacher Lily.

"Staff were treated to croissants in the staffroom – thanks, Lidl!"

The European Day of Languages fell in the middle of BCHS's celebrations, on Wednesday, September 26. The celebration is organised by the EU and the Council of Europe.

There are around 200 European languages, 24 official EU languages and an estimated 60 regional or minority languages. These figures are not including languages spoken by people from elsewhere within the world who have migrated to live within the EU.
