AN ELGIN building society is celebrating half a century in business.

The local branch of Nationwide Building Society has been on Elgin High Street since its opening in 1973.

As part of anniversary celebrations, Moray's MP Douglas Ross was invited to tour the branch, along with long-serving member Mrs Doyle.

Mrs Doyle, who visits the branch weekly, was delighted to share some cake with members of staff – who also gave her a card to thank her for her long-standing custom.

Gordon Glen, branch manager at Nationwide in Elgin, was "honoured" to welcome Douglas Ross into the branch.

He said: "It was a great opportunity for us to showcase the services we are able to offer and the support we can provide to those struggling with the cost of living – from face-to-face conversations through to supporting members on the telephone.

"Nationwide remains committed to its branch network through its branch promise, which allows us to continue to support our members through these difficult times.”

Mr Ross met the team and toured the branch at Nationwide, where he learned about the services offered and experienced first-hand the new ways the Society is serving members.

Nationwide’s branch promise was recently extended until at least 2026, meaning it won’t leave any town or city in which it is based without access to a branch.

One of the services Mr Ross was interested in was Money Lessons – Nationwide’s financial education programme for children and young people.

Colleagues volunteer to deliver sessions on a wide range of topics including savings, budgeting, and staying safe online.

Douglas Ross said: “It was great to visit Nationwide’s Elgin branch and meet the team who work hard to support local customers and members.

"I was particularly pleased to learn that Nationwide has extended its branch promise until at least 2026 and I look forward to seeing the positive contribution the branch will make to the local community both now and in the future.”
