A MORAY community is preparing to return to its past as it looks to the future.

New Elgin will be abuzz with activity during a free family fun day on September 14, which will include the launch of a new Community Plan.

Following a year of talks across the community, the plan outlines 14 priorities identified by local people.

Among them is the return of the traditional New Elgin Fayre and the family fun day will be used to gauge demand for its reintroduction into the annual calendar.

Local residents, community group representatives and professionals working in the area form the New Elgin East Community Action Plan Working Group, which is driving the initiative forward with support from Moray Community Planning Partnership.

Claire Howie, who lives in New Elgin and is on the group, said: "This has been a really exciting and worthwhile thing to be involved with.

"The actions that are in the plan have been identified following over 1000 conversations with members of the public in the area and reflects their ambition for New Elgin."

The group has undertaken surveys, held pop up events at flu clinics and ran a stall at New Elgin Primary Christmas Fayre.

Ideas for improvements were first identified and then prioritised.

Claire said: "The Family Fun day in itself is an attempt to see if the traditional New Elgin Fayre can be revived and forms one of the actions from the plan.

"We hope that if it can be a success this year the community can continue to build on in future years."

As part of the fun day, there will be a host of activities, food, refreshments, demonstrations, a police van and fire engine, crafts, games, music and dance.

The public premiere of a New Elgin film project from M:ADE, Moray Arts Development Engagement, will also take place.

The event kicks off at 1pm in the New Elgin and Ashgrove Public Hall, where the plan will be formally launched.

New Elgin Primary School children were asked to come up with a design for the document's cover and the winner will also be announced at the free Fun Day event, which runs until 4pm.
