CONSTRUCTION of a new section of footpath at The Wards in Elgin is under way.

The project will aim to improve pedestrian safety at The Wards, which can be a particularly busy road due to the railway crossing and the nearby retail park.

Two existing footpaths will be linked by providing a pavement where there currently isn’t one.

The work, which has been funded through the Scottish Government’s Cycling Walking Safer Routes grant, involves the demolition of a wall and shed at a property, construction of around 50 metres of new footpath – which will take two to three weeks – and the installation of a boundary fence and gates.

The wall and shed at this property are set to be demolished.

Traffic restrictions are in place, with a one-way system and a prohibition of waiting order in operation until March 28.

The diversion is: The Wards >> Wards Road >> Station Road >> New Elgin Road >> Edgar Road >> The Wards.

Leader of Moray Council, and councillor for Elgin City South, Graham Leadbitter said: “The Wards is a busy part of Elgin and we want to encourage as many people as possible to leave the car at home and travel actively.

"By improving and upgrading the footpath at The Wards, it will give pedestrians more confidence they can get about safely.”
