STAFF at Elgin's former Thomas Cook branch were delighted to be back at work today – under the name of rival travel firm Hays.

The store is one of 60 in Scotland and 555 throughout the UK bought in a deal, for an undisclosed sum, by the UK's largest independent travel agent after the collapse of Thomas Cook.

Hundreds of jobs are likely to be saved in the deal – and Sunderland-based Hays says it plans to recruit more people.

There was relief for the ex-Thomas Cook staff in Elgin, who said: "The ex-Thomas Cook Elgin team's new venture has begun.

"We are super excited to announce that we are the face of the new Hays travel team in Elgin."

They added: "It broke our hearts that we weren't able to say goodbye to our many loyal customers from Thomas Cook.

"We were delighted when Hays Travel offered us positions and an opportunity to continue to work together again as a team and provide you with amazing holidays and service.

"We are excited to see what this next chapter brings as we move forward as part of the Hays Travel family."
