New Moray Council housing allocation scheme to 'award points' to domestic abuse victims and key workers
A NEW Moray Council housing allocation scheme will give priority to victims of domestic abuse, key workers and those who care at home.
A proposal to change the council house allocation process was approved by the Housing and Community Safety Committee on Tuesday, February 13.
The aim is to make sure available homes go to those in the greatest housing need, while demand exceeds supply.
The changes will award points to applicants who are transferring as part of the tenants downsizing initiative, those who have experienced domestic abuse and increase points for key workers.
Points for care and support will also be a new aspect of the policy. In addition, it will ensure that veterans are not at a disadvantage when applying for housing, particularly in relation to time spent outwith Moray.
Committee Chair, councillor Amber Dunbar (Conservative, Elgin North), said she was pleased the committee had unanimously approved the policy.
She said: “While we are building more council homes, we simply can’t keep up with the demand.
"Ensuring homes go to people who need them most is part of our wider programme of work to improve housing support for residents.
"I thank the housing staff for their efforts to put this policy together based on their invaluable knowledge and experience.”
A public consultation that informed the proposals ran between September 13 and October 27, 2023.
