STRANDED in New York, a Moray whisky executive has described how parts of the ravaged city were "like a war zone".

Ian Logan, from Elgin, was grounded by Superstorm Sandy and holed up in his hotel while it wreaked havoc across the city and eastern coast of America.

"It was incredible. The wind was constant and blowing like hell at one point.

"I was on the 26th floor of my hotel and relatively safe. At nine o’clock in the evening you could hear stuff clattering down the street.

"I was told to keep the blinds drawn in case the window came in. My bed was 5ft from the window so it was pretty hairy during the night."

Speaking to ‘The Scot’ on Wednesday evening, Mr Logan, an international brand ambassador for Chivas Bros, added: "It has been a hell of an experience. One woman came into the hotel with her 18-month-old daughter and said their house was under six feet of water. There were lots of people checking in to the hotel."

Sandy was responsible for 64 deaths in the United States and over 70 in the Caribbean. Six million homes and businesses were left without electricity and thousands of people were stranded in their homes, cut off by flood water.
