DRIVERS have been urged to cut their speed on the roads.

The police can only do so much and drivers have to take responsibility for their own speed.

The call from Moray MP Douglas Ross comes during the charity Brake's Road Safety Week from November 16-22.

The theme is 'No Need to Speed' and last year 19 people were killed on the roads in Moray, Aberdeenshire, and Aberdeen, with 511 people injured.

Mr Ross has previously won an award for his campaigning work to make roads safer for young motorists, said: “I have seen the devastation that dangerous driving can bring to families and communities across Moray, and I am determined to do whatever I can to help bring an end to this needless waste of lives.

“I am pleased to support Road Safety Week and happy to endorse the message on speeding.

“Research suggests that seven in ten male motorists admit to having driven faster than 100mph.

“That illustrates the scale of the problem and there is no doubt that excessive speed is a big factor in many accidents here in Moray.

“Campaigns like this one that focus on speeding help to draw attention to the problem and hopefully lead to better driver behaviour.”
